SafetyWing Nomad Insurance review: cheap rolling cover, with real limits

We read SafetyWing's May 2026 policy wording, its live price calculator and its FAQ. Essential costs $62.72 per 4 weeks if you are under 40 and has no deductible. Its limits and exclusions decide whether that is a bargain for you.

Spike rating

3.5/5

Essential keeps emergency medical cover rolling every 4 weeks for $62.72 if you are under 40, with no deductible and no need to be at home to buy it. The wording is the catch: a $250,000 limit, no mental health or cancer cover, a strict pre-existing rule and short visits home. Treat it as accident and emergency cover abroad, not as health insurance.

Good

  • $62.72 per 4 weeks for ages 10 to 39, and no deductible on either plan
  • Buy it while already abroad; Essential renews every 4 weeks and can be stopped from the dashboard
  • One child under 10 per adult (two per group) is covered free on Essential
  • The policy wording states a limit under every benefit, in plain English

Not so good

  • $250,000 limit per period, and medical evacuation capped at $100,000 for life
  • No cover for mental health, cancer, routine care or most pre-existing conditions
  • Home visits are capped at 30 days per 90 (15 if home is the US), and US travel costs extra
  • The price more than triples at 60 to 69, and you cannot buy a new plan from age 70
  • Mostly pay first, claim later: direct billing is offered only for inpatient care outside the US
Best for:
Healthy travellers under 40 on the road for months who want rolling emergency cover they can buy from abroad.
Not for:
Anyone with an ongoing condition, people who spend long stretches at home, and riders of motorbikes over 50cc who skip the add-on.
Price:
$62.72 per 4 weeks (Essential, ages 10–39)

What it is

SafetyWing sells Nomad Insurance in two tiers. Essential is travel medical insurance. It pays for new, unexpected illness or injury while you are outside your home country, plus a short list of travel mishaps such as delays and lost bags. Complete is full international health insurance, with routine care, mental health visits, cancer treatment and maternity, bundled with a separate travel policy. Essential asks no medical questions, and you can buy it from wherever you happen to be. Complete involves an application that takes up to 10 days.

Essential is underwritten by SafetyWing Insurance I.I., the firm's own insurer, incorporated in Puerto Rico in 2022 and regulated by the island's Office of the Commissioner of Insurance. The wording carries a blunt notice: no coverage from this insurer is protected by any guarantee or insolvency fund in Puerto Rico. Complete's health cover comes from a different Puerto Rico insurer, VUMI Group I.I.

Pricing

Essential works like a subscription. You pay every 4 weeks, and it rolls on until you stop it. On 12 October 2026 the calculator quoted $62.72 per 4 weeks for ages 10 to 39, $102.76 for 40 to 49, $161.28 for 50 to 59 and $218.96 for 60 to 69. One child under 10 per adult rides free, up to two per group.

Paying for 364 days upfront takes 10% off, which is $733.82 for a year if you are under 40. That version also comes with a $150 prepaid card for small covered medical bills, so you don't front the cash at a pharmacy. Add-ons cost extra. For a 10-to-39-year-old, US cover added $53.48 per 4 weeks, adventure sports $10 and electronics theft $10. The FAQ still lists the electronics add-on at $20. Check the total at checkout.

Complete is sold monthly on a 12-month commitment: $177.50 for ages 18 to 39, $253.50 for 40 to 49, $380.50 for 50 to 59 and $681.50 for 60 to 64.

Children under 18 on a Complete plan cost $118.50 a month, and paying annually saves 10%. SafetyWing's FAQ says neither plan has a deductible.

What it covers

Essential's ceiling is $250,000 per insurance period. Hospital stays, surgery, scans and prescriptions all sit under it, along with up to $1,000 for emergency dental pain once you have held cover for 14 days. Medical evacuation to a better-equipped hospital is capped at $100,000 for your lifetime, or $25,000 if it stems from a pre-existing condition. Flying you home for treatment is limited to $5,000.

The travel benefits are modest. A delay of 3 to 8 hours pays $60. Eight hours or more pays $150, plus $150 for each extra night, up to $450 a trip. Lost checked luggage pays up to $500 an item and $3,000 a period once the bag has been missing for 10 days. A death or deathbed in your close family, or fire or weather destroying more than 40% of your home, pays up to $5,000 for a ticket. Evacuation from civil unrest stops at $10,000 for life.

Home visits are where people get caught. On the 4-weekly plan you get 30 days at home per 90 days of cover, or 15 if home is the US, and only once you hold an insurance period of at least 90 days. Stay longer and cover pauses until you leave. The 364-day upfront plan stretches this to 179 days a year, with no single visit counted beyond 90 days.

Complete is a different product. It covers up to $1.5 million a policy year and has no time limit in your country of residence. Outpatient care shares a $5,000 annual pot, mental health is capped at 10 visits a year, and maternity pays up to $2,500 after a 10-month wait. Once an application is approved, cover starts on the 1st or 15th of a month.

The fine print

Pre-existing conditions are the big exclusion. Essential looks back 180 days from your start date and also counts symptoms in the 10 days before you bought. A sudden emergency from an old, non-chronic condition is covered, but not in your first 28 days and only if you are treated within 24 hours of symptoms. Buy a fresh plan, and everything you had before becomes pre-existing again. Complete is stricter still: anything you were ever treated for or diagnosed with, plus symptoms in the past two years. SafetyWing restored that definition on 1 October 2026 after an interim version.

Essential's exclusions run to 58 numbered items. Mental health disorders, cancer, routine check-ups and injuries while drunk are all out, and so are pregnancy and childbirth, apart from complications in the first 26 weeks. Search and rescue is excluded, helicopters included. Motorbikes over 50cc need the adventure add-on, as does anything above 4,500 metres, and nothing above 6,000 metres is covered. The wording lists off-piste skiing and whitewater rafting among activities excluded even with the add-on.

The electronics add-on depreciates gear at 2% a month, so a 50-month-old laptop is worth nothing to a claim, and a theft must be reported to police within 24 hours.

You cannot add or drop an add-on mid-plan. Changing one means buying a new plan, which resets pre-existing conditions.

You file claims in the dashboard, with itemised invoices, a medical report and proof of payment. SafetyWing says approved claims usually reach your bank within 10 business days. A denial can be appealed twice within 180 days, and disputes go to arbitration unless you opt out in writing within 60 days of your period ending.

Cancelling Essential mid-period refunds unused premium only if you have not claimed, minus a $25 fee. On the 364-day plan the refund is capped at 65% of the premium, minus $60. Complete can be cancelled only in its first 15 days, at renewal or after a qualifying life event such as a new job.

As a crowd-sourced sanity check, SafetyWing scored 4.3 on Trustpilot from 4,174 reviews on 12 October.

Complaints about denied claims are easy to find on Reddit. SafetyWing's own FAQ names the two commonest reasons for a denial: a pre-existing condition, or missing documents.

Who it suits

Essential fits a healthy traveller under 40 who will be away for months and wants cover that keeps renewing. You can buy it from a guesthouse in Chiang Mai after your old policy lapses. It also works if you keep a health plan at home, because home cover is short.

It is a poor fit if you need regular treatment, ride bigger bikes without the add-on, or are over 60, where the price more than triples. US citizens and residents get no cover inside the US beyond the home-visit allowance.

Alternatives

Genki Traveler is another monthly subscription, for up to 12 months, with €1,000,000 of cover and a €50 deductible per case. Heymondo's Long Stay policy is sold in blocks of at least 90 days, can be bought abroad and lists medical cover up to $2.5 million. If you want routine care, compare SafetyWing Complete with a dedicated expat health plan. World Nomads also provides travel insurance; we have not reviewed it.

How we rated it

We scored five criteria from the published wording, the live calculator and the FAQ, then averaged them. We did not buy a policy or make a claim, so nothing here reflects how a real claim was handled.

Value and flexibility earn 4 each. Coverage and claims handling get 3, and clarity of terms gets 3.5.

Questions people ask

Does SafetyWing Essential cover pre-existing conditions?

Mostly not. Essential excludes anything you were treated for, had medication changed for or had symptoms of in the 180 days before your start date. It does pay for a sudden emergency flare-up of a pre-existing condition that is not chronic, but only after your first 28 days of cover and only if you are treated within 24 hours of symptoms starting.

Am I covered by SafetyWing when I visit home?

Briefly, on Essential. Once you hold an insurance period of at least 90 days, you get up to 30 days at home per 90 days of cover, or 15 days if your home country is the US. The 364-day upfront plan raises that to 179 days a year, with no more than 90 days in a row. Complete covers you in your country of residence with no time limit.

Does SafetyWing cover scooter accidents in Southeast Asia?

Yes, if you hold the right licence for where you are riding, wear a helmet and are under the local drink-drive limit. On Essential, anything above 50cc needs the adventure sports add-on, which cost $10 per 4 weeks on 12 October 2026. Liability for damage you cause with a vehicle is excluded.
